Learn Why Hardware Wallets Ask for Multiple Confirmations When Sending ADA

Learn why hardware wallets (Ledger, Trezor, Keystone) require multiple confirmations when sending ADA and how to navigate the prompts with confidence.

Understanding Hardware Wallet Confirmation Prompts

When using a hardware wallet to send ADA or complete a transaction on JPG Store, you may be prompted multiple times to confirm sending funds. This is a common question from users, and it happens due to how Cardano transactions handle UTXOs (Unspent Transaction Outputs).

Unlike many software wallets that summarize balance changes, hardware wallets display every individual UTXO used in the transaction. This means you’ll need to confirm each UTXO manually, even though the final amount you are sending remains correct.

Why Do Hardware Wallets Ask You to Confirm Each UTXO?

Cardano’s blockchain does not use a single balance like a bank account but instead operates on the UTXO (Unspent Transaction Output) model, similar to having multiple bills and coins in a wallet.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Each transaction selects multiple UTXOs from your wallet to cover the amount you are sending.

  2. Your hardware wallet displays each UTXO separately and asks for confirmation.

  3. You are not sending more than intended—you’re just approving the use of those UTXOs in the transaction.

This differs from how software wallets like Vespr or Eternl present transactions, as they often simplify this by only showing the final balance change instead of listing all UTXOs being used.

What Should You Do?

  • Carefully review each prompt on your hardware wallet and confirm them one by one.

  • Understand that these confirmations do not mean you are sending extra ADA—they simply reflect the individual UTXOs being used.

  • If in doubt, check the final balance change shown before approving the transaction.
